About us

The Mizak Health Clinic was opened over a year ago by an organization called Haitian Artisans for Peace International. A group of "grassroot nurses" from Marcus, Iowa were the first team to start the clinic and it was a success. Since the clinic has opened, healthcare workers from the US have empowered the Mizak community through training Haitian healtcare workers. Now they have a hypertesion clinic and a program for malnurished children. Our dream is to help the Haitian's create a better Haiti with a sustainable clinic operated by the healthcare workers of Mizak. We are hoping to have a nursing school in the mountains someday.

IOWA TEAM...THE GROUP THAT STARTED IT ALL!
It was about March 2008 and Lee was ready to come back to Iowa from Mizak, Haiti for a short visit. In an e-mail he said they sure could use some volunteers in Mizak. I responded back to him and said I have always wanted to go on a medical mission trip. Lee was home by Easter and we had our first meeting in April to see how many if any interested volunteers. By October of that year we were headed to Mizak, Haiti with a team of 19. We had 6 nurses, one doctor and 12 support people coming from Indiana, Colorado, Ohio and Iowa. We held an out patient clinic Mon. through Fri. for two weeks. We were the first medical mission team ever to go into Mizak. We also had a dental clinic where we applied a fluoride varnish to the children's teeth. We again sent a team in July 2009 with some of the same team members returning. A new site was obtained for our clinic with it being a more workable site and we were able to have a bigger pharmacy area with the team bringing in more medicine then the year before and many more medical supplies. This year we involved the health care workers teaching them assessment skills and knowledge of medicines. The team will be going again this year July 19-24, 2010.
